UBC 101

Done is my favourite word right now. Done First Year. Done all my finals. Done with school. Well, the last one is sort of true but I’m going to focus on the freedom of school for now.

Celebrating the summer, I’m announcing a new project for the summer. Inspired by both NBC TV show Community‘s episode titles, and lots of other blog posts teaching new first-years about UBC, I’m going to be starting a new blog  series called UBC 101 (not the actual, free UBC 101 programs offered by UBC).

Each course will focus on a specific aspect about UBC that I’ve learned/observed. I hope this will help all students considering or already at UBC to get better marks, more sleep, and have a good time at university. Because we don’t pay $4000+ tuition to die before getting our degrees.

Courses include: Beginner CommutingIntroduction to Cheat SheetsIrving All Nighters 109, Advanced Textbook Buying, The Art of Course Selection, and some other ones I can’t think of a name of yet.

Courses start in May 2010. Now enjoy your summer everyone!

You know it’s end of term when…

You see people sleeping on the floor.

You see the Qualicum Room has more tables than the start of term.

The 99 is full at 10pm.

Irving is full at 10 am.

The writing centre is overloaded with students.

Tutorials are now full with students.

You hear “allnighters” more than “sleep”

People start disabling their Facebooks.

People are drinking less/more.

Prep101. Enough said.

Professors have extended office hours.

Irving is opening 24/7.

You hear “I’m so screwed” a lot more than usual.

You see a lot of Boston Pizza boxes at Irving.

The Birdcoop is emptier.

There’s a lot more cigarette butts outside Irving.

There’s a lot going on this month, namely finals.

With Irving packed with no social-life, sleep-deprived students, it’s the best place to overhear funny things. For example, last night I heard this conversation:

Guy 1 going to the SUB: Want anything?

Guy 2: You on a dish

Share things you see and hear, good luck on your finals and then it’s a 4 month summer (first time for First Years)!

Tina Fey on SNL

Before anything: shout out to Henrik Sedin for winning the Art Ross Trophy! With 112 points at the end of the season, 3 more than Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, he deserves the win. Plus he’s the first Vancouver Canucks player to win. How great is that? A lot.

Now back to the post:

Tina Fey is one of my favourite actresses on television and in the movies. She’s the number one reason why I love comedy, and being smart-sexy doesn’t hurt.

She hosted Saturday Night Live last night, a personal record of 2 hosting appearances and I sadly had to miss it because I was at the Great Arts Send-off. Then again, Justin Bieber was the musical guest, so half of me wasn’t missing it. Off topic: TGAS was great: the food was great, great atmosphere, and great people. Not a bad night for $0.

Back to Tina Fey’s appearance on SNL. Although I missed it, I quickly watched it this morning and she was amazing. Especially because she appeared once again as former Governor of Alaska and Republican Vice President nominee Sarah Palin in a sketch called the Sarah Palin Network. It’s just as funny as her earlier sketches as Palin.

Check out the sketch and get ready to have some great laughs.

I would personally love it if 30 Main Street were a real TV show. Who doesn’t want to watch the life of a woman in her late thirties, so concentrated on her career that she doesn’t have grandchildren?

Beats and Tunes: Jason Chen

The Talent

Jason Chen is a Taiwanese-American singer from Los Angeles, California. His main talent is his singing. I’m not a music analyst or know a lot about music so I can’t describe his voice really well. It sounds good and not something I’m hearing a lot of from artists right now.

Not a music major like many of the YouTube artists you see. He’s studying at UCLA for a business economics major, pretty impressive. He plays violin and sings, don’t know about other instruments. He sings in English and Mandarin, mostly English. All of his uploads are covers, no originals yet.

Being a very helpful guy, most of his songs are in mp3 format to download off his Page. My favourite songs are Come Back and Hate That I Love You. I have most of his songs on iPod.

Check Jason’s YouTube and Facebook Page.

How I discovered him

While procrastinating, again, I was on Facebook, and I saw that a bunch of my friends added Jason’s Page. Curious to know what the interest was about, I found his fan page which linked to his YouTube account and his talent.

Summer Internship: Check

3.15pm – I got turned down by the Burnaby Hospital Foundation for their Marketing and Events Internship.

3:24pm – I was offered and I accepted being the Volunteer Resources Intern with the Multiple Sclerosis Society during the summer!

My summer is pretty full now: 2 positions at psychology labs, an internship, 1-2 summer courses, trip(s) to the US, +/- a part-time job. Don’t know if I can manage all that, but at least I know I’m not going to waste my summer.
